June 19th, 2019(Nyamilepedia) — As the lean season approaches, and food is scarce throughout the country, Tearfund has expressed its concerns, saying, if food shortages continue to pose a serious threat to the country’s 61 percent of the population, there could be a looming famine on the horizon.

“South Sudan is facing the prospect of another catastrophic famine. As the country enters its lean season, where very little is harvested and food prices rocket, hundreds of thousands of people face starvation” says Martin Ruppenthal, Tearfund’s Country Director for South Sudan.

Adding that, without available food and complementary feeding for malnourished infants, the reported starvation could eventually become a deadly reality.

“South Sudan is once again facing a very critical situation, …, that’s why it’s so important that we’re working with our partner organisations to tackle malnutrition.” Martin continued.

“Without food and nutritional support for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, children, and people with disabilities, starvation becomes a deadly reality.” He added.

The civil war in South Sudan has forced millions of people to leave their homes and made their everyday life more difficult.

Despite reduction in military confrontation between the warring parts as the ceasefire seems to hold, insecurity is still rampant throughout the country and more people remains locked to the Refugee camps and IDPs centers.
