June 11th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – Sudanese opposition groups including the Declaration of Freedom and Change group have agreed to a Ethiopian proposal for a 15-member sovereignty council, sources with knowledge told the Nyamilepedia.
This came days after the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Dr. Abiy Ahmed, visited the capital Khartoum in a bid to try to bridge gap between the opposition and the ruling military council.
One source told the Nyamilepedia that the Ethiopian Premier proposed that a 15-member Council headed by the military junta be formed and eight of the members be given to the opposition.
“The Ethiopian Prime Minister proposed that the Sovereignty Council be made up of 15 members eight of whom would belong to the opposition and seven to the military,” the source told the Nyamilepedia from the Sudanese capital Khartoum on condition of anonymity.
In April, following months of protest by the Sudanese public, the Sudanese army decided to remove long-time leader, Omar al-Bashir, who came to power in a bloodless coup in June 1989.
Following the army take-over, protesters represented by the Declaration of Freedom and Change Forces demanded that the army handover power to civilians, something which has been a sticking point in the talks over the transition.
