November 29th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – A Sudanese military committee has been set up to monitor the unification of South Sudan’s rival forces, deputy chairperson of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo – also known as Hemeti – has said.

Hemeti who is in Juba told reporters following a meeting with President Salva Kiir at the state house J1 on Wednesday that the committee will monitor the unification of the rival forces and will make sure that much of the work of the security mechanisms is completed by first half of the pre-transitional period.

“We came here to see and follow the progress of the agreement. We want to see the road map and what needs to be done in the first 50 days. We will meet with the joint committees of the parties to discuss the problems and challenges facing these committees. I hope there won’t be any obstacles because we will have a military committee deployed to follow up with the training at the cantonment sites,” said Hemeti.

“We will have a committee in Juba to monitor and follow up on the training centers and report to us as guarantors so that we follow up on the issues with our brothers,” he added.

President Salva Kiir and main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar early this month agreed to extend the pre-transitional period for 100 days. An initial extension from May to November failed to resolve the outstanding issues provided for in the peace accord the two men signed last year.

South Sudan descended into a bloody civil war in December 2013 after forces loyal to President Salva Kiir targeted members of the Nuer community in what would later be the Juba Massacre.

The war has displaced millions and killed hundreds of thousands according to multiple reports from regional and international organizations including the UN and the African Union.
