January 25th 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – The Sudanese army denied on Friday reports that South Sudan’s army has occupied the contested area of Abyei after an attack by Arab militia men killed over 30 people.

Early this week, tribal armed raiders from the Arab Miseriya tribe attacked an area in Abyei killing over 30 and injuring more than 20 people.

The government in Juba condemned the Abyei attack and said an investigation committee was formed and would work with a Sudanese committee to find facts on the attack.

Sudanese social media users circulated several reports saying South Sudan’s army has “occupied” Abyei following the attack.

In a statement, the Sudanese army spokesman Brigadier General Amer Mohamed Hassan said the reports were untrue saying the situation in Abyei has normalized since the attack ended.

“On social media, there were reports of occupation on Abyei by South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF). In this regard, we emphasize the incorrectness of such information and that the situation in Abyei city have returned to normal and the problem has been resolved through committees from the Abyei region,” General Hassan said in a statement seen by Nyamilepedia.

“On the political level, the defense ministers of the two countries met in Juba and agreed on a road-map to resolve the problem between the parties in question. So, w reiterates our assurance to the people that the situation is back to normal and we call on everyone not to heed to the rumors,” he added.
