August 21st 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – Sudan on Wednesday swore in former United Nations official as the country’s prime minister a week after his nomination by opposition forces.
Abdalla Hamdok who was appointed today afternoon by Chairman of Sovereignty Council (SC) General Abdel Fatah al-Burhan took oath of office moments ago.
The swearing in was administered by Sudan’s Chief Justice in presence of al-Burhan.
He is the first prime minister in Sudan since the ouster of Sadig al-Mahdi by former leader Omar al-Bashir in 1989.
The swearing in of Hamdok, an economist who has served in international institutions, is a critical step towards the creation of a transitional government after the overthrow of long-time president Omar Al-Bashir in April following months of unrest.
Hamdok arrived in Sudan from Ethiopia on Wednesday evening and said upon arrival that the next step requires the leaders to unite ranks.
“The next phase requires concerted efforts of the compatriots and the unification of ranks in order to build a strong state,” he said upon arrival from Ethiopia.
