Oct 31, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) — Following months of negotiations between Khartoum and Washington, the United States is pleased to dismiss judgements and claims against Sudan in the U.S. courts. In addition, the U.S. will restore Sudan’s sovereignty immunity.
Addressing the media after the signing of the agreement between Sudan and the U.S., Sudan’s Ministry of Justice, Nasreldin Abdelbari, announced on Friday that the two countries have reached an agreement to restore clean up Sudan’s reputation under the U.S law.
Despite promising to pay $335 million earlier, this new deal did not come without extra financial commitment from the Sudanese.
In addition to $335 millions, Khartoum is expected to pay extra $72 millions to clean its records from the U.S. database.
“According to the agreement, which will enter into force after legislation is enacted, Sudan will pay $335 million, on top of approximately $72 million already paid, for distribution to victims of terrorism,” part of a statement released by the justice ministry reads.
“In exchange, the default judgments and claims against Sudan in U.S. courts will be dismissed, and Sudan’s sovereign immunities under U.S. law will be restored to those enjoyed by countries that have never been designated by the United States as a State Sponsor of Terrorism,” the statement added.
In addition to paying over $400 millions, Sudan is also crafting a deal with Israel at the demand of the U.S and collectively, these will see Sudan removed from the Americans’ blacker
Now that the two countries have reached these agreements, President Trump will now face the Congress to restore Sudan’s sovereignty, the only body that has such powers.
Addressing the media, the Minister of Justice Nasr al-Din Abdel Bari regrets that Sudan had to pay such a huge amount; however, he sees more opportunities to improve the economy if such American barriers are removed.
“But today’s agreement allows Sudan and its people to resolve historical liabilities, restore normal relations with the United States, and move forward toward democracy and better economic times. Today’s agreement is an investment in a prosperous future for Sudan and its people,” said Abdel Bari.
