July 16th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The newly elected leader of South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) Josephine Lagu has said the opposition umbrella won’t take measures against ex-chairman Gabriel Changson Chang and South Sudan United Movement (SSUM) leader Denay Chagor until efforts to reconcile the groups are exhausted.

Early this month, Changson who is also the leader of the Federal Democratic Party (FDP) said in a statement that Denay Chagor, the leader of SSUM/A, will lead the alliance for six months before handing back to him for another six months.

The statement angered six opposition leaders that make up the eight-member opposition consortium forcing them to issue a joint statement asking Changson to revoke the statement within 24 hours.

Following a failure by Changson and Chagor to backtrack on the statement, the six leaders decided to elect Josephine Lagu for a six-month term.

Last week, the six leaders issued another statement through its spokesman Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin who is also the Secretary-General asking Changson and Chagor to explain – in writing – why they continued to use the name and logo of the alliance within 48 hours.

The two did not respond to the statement but speaking to Nyamilepedia on Tuesday, the newly elected chairperson Josephine Lagu said they will not proceed with actions against the two because they have been requested by mediators to sideline that until efforts to mediate are exhausted.

“We have been requested by a number of people of good will not to proceed with action against the two organizations [FDP & SSUM/A] until all efforts to mediate are exhausted,” Ms Lagu said.

She further said that it is on that basis that they “have not taken any action yet.”  However, Lagu added that the patience “won’t be indefinite.”
