August 8th, 2022 — South Sudan International Advocacy for Human Rights, a civil society organization based in Washington, urges the African Union, IGAD and International community to denounce and put more pressure on the South Sudan government for extending the Revitalization peace agreement for another 24 months without seeking legitimacy of such decisions from the peace guarantors and all stakeholders.
According to SSIAHR President, Peter Gatkuoth W Kuel, the extension is a mere delay tactics for the ruling elites to hold on power without political will to implement the peace agreement.Â
“SSIAHR believes this delay tactic lacks a political will to implement the peace agreement and is more dangerous for displaced citizens inside the country as well as the refugees in all Neighboring countries such as Uganda, Kenya, Congo, Ethiopia and Sudan.” SSIAHR president said.Â
According to Kuel, South Sudan cannot wait for another 2 years while the innocent civilians continue to suffer under the regime of president Salva Kiir.
“South Sudanese cannot wait anymore for another 2 years of suffering while Salva Kiir and other political groups enjoy South Sudanese Oil money in hotels and overseas traveling.” He said.
“President Salva Kiir said, in his televised speech, that this revitalized peace agreement was not meant to be implemented and this is what he is exactly doing now.” He continued.
Gatkuoth reiterates that South Sudan is running a large government that is not sustainable and therefore it is a shame to continue to watch the regime extending its lifespan without legitimacy.
“It is shameful for a country like South Sudan which has a population of 13-15 million people will want to continue extending peace implementation for another 24th month while maintaining 5 Vice Presidents and more than 500 MPs. ” Gatkuoth said.
“SSIAHR will recommend that South Sudan should not demand financial support from the International Community while willfully and intentionally violating important provisions in the peace agreement. ” He added.
South Sudan’s Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity extended its lifespan last week saying that only 27% of the peace agreement has been implemented and therefore the remaining cannot be implemented within the remaining six months; however, it is unclear how the RTGONU will implement the remaining 73% in 24 months when it barely implemented 27% in 30 months.
