September 25th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s main armed opposition group SPLM-IO has denied reports that its chairman, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, has relinquished his would-be First Vice-President position in favor of his wife Angelina Teny.
As per the revitalized peace agreement, Machar would be reinstated back to the previous position he held as First Vice-President prior to the collapse of 2015 peace agreement in 2016.
South Sudan social media users alleged on Tuesday that Machar had decided to relinquish the FVP position in favor of his wife Angelina Teny, a senior member of the main armed opposition movement.
In a statement on Wednesday, the SPLM-IO director of information and public relations Puok Both Baluang said the report were untrue labeling them as baseless.
“The SPLM/SPLA (IO) would like to categorically refute the malicious propaganda and fake news originating from “South Sudan TMZ” Facebook Page and circulated by anti-SPLM (IO) and anti-peace supporters; dated, September 24, 2019 – subject: H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon has decided to relinquished power and give chance to Hon. Angelina Teny to be the Designated First Vice President in the upcoming R-TgoNU” the statement extended to Nyamilepedia partly read.
“The SPLM/SPLA (IO) would like to assure members, the People of South Sudan and the public at large, that this is mere propaganda and wishful thinking. H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon has taken no such decisions. Dr. Machar is still the South Sudan’s Designated First Vice President as stipulated in the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).
“The SPLM/SPLA (IO) would like to caution members to be vigilant and should not succumb to this malicious propaganda and fake news by our partners in peace, which intended to create division in your Movement.”
