July 27, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s main armed opposition group, SPLM-IO, led by First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny, has said that it has completed the nomination of its members to the would-be revitalized transitional parliament.
The revitalized peace deal signed by President Salva Kiir and Machar in 2018 provided for the reconstitution of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly and the Council of States.
That action not yet been taken because several provisions of the revitalized peace agreement have not been implemented, but the international and regional community have urged President Salva Kiir to immediately dissolve the parliament and reconstitute it.
Oyet Nathaniel, a senior member of the SPLM-IO and member of the National Constitutional Amendment Committee, said the group has completed the nomination of its members and was ready to submit once the parliament is dissolved.
“Our fear is that the list might be submitted to the current legislature, so we want the current to be dissolved first to allow the reconstitution to take place,” Oyet said.
According to the 2018 peace agreement, the National Legislature shall be expanded from 400 to 550 members: 332 from the SPLM, 128 from SPLA-IO, 50 from Other Political Parties and ten from the Former Detainees.
