Nov 16, 2020(Nyamilepedia) — The minister for petroleum, Puot Kang Chuol, calls on the president to speed up the appointment of General Olony as the governor of Upper Nile State for a successful implementation of the revitalized peace agreement and the progress of the state.
While addressing the members of the press this afternoon, the SPLM-IO youth league chairperson confirmed that President Salva Kiir had accepted to appoint General Olony but along the way changed his mind.
“Well we were previously informed that the president has accepted to appoint the governor of Upper Nile but I cannot be in a better position to tell you what transpired next, I don’t know,” The minister for petroleum said.
The Petroleum minister insisted that South Sudan is not whole without the Upper Nile State.
“We want to move forward, but Upper Nile is one of the states. You don’t have ten states without Upper Nile the same way you will not have ten states without any one of the states in the Republic of South Sudan,” he said.
He asked the general public and everybody that is involved in the process to speed up the appointment of General Olony so that the people of the upper Nile are not left behind.
When a local radio reached out to the press secretary to the office of the president, he said that he has not yet been informed about whether Olony will be appointed or not.
Ateny further said that “as soon as I am informed, I will let you know.”
General Olony was nominated by the SPLM-IO leader Dr Riek Machar in June but the president did not appoint him as he was appointing the other governors.
The people of the Upper Nile held demonstrations last week asking for Olony to be appointed but the president is yet to say a word.
