August 7, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s main armed opposition group, SPLM-IO, led by First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny has accused the SPLM-IG under President Salva Kiir Mayardit of tactically delaying the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.
This comes after the government of President Salva Kiir proposed during talks on Monday, that other parties in the states including the SPLM-IO, should not have deputy governors claiming that the division of state deputy governors is not in the revitalized peace agreement.
Speaking to Nyamilepedia this afternoon, Dut Majokdit, a senior member of the SPLM-IO in Northern Bahr el Ghazal state said Kiir and Machar had constituted a committee to deliberate on the states power-sharing arrangement on July 25.
Dut said a new deadlock has emerged and that the government of President Salva Kiir was deliberately buying time to tactically delay the timely implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.
“The ITGONU proposal on the states structure is delay tactics. The president and the FVP met on 25th July and constituted a committee from all the parties to the agreement to discuss the structures of the state institutions,” Dut said.
“Therefore the Parties had presented their position papers on how we are going to form the state governments in a meeting of the committee on Monday but the Parties reached deadlock on some issues like deputy governors, state legislative assembly as the former ITGONU proposed 17 ministers in the State, 71 MPs, 9 independent commissions and 8 specialized committees in the state Parliament and 5 Advisors to the Governor,” Dut said.
Dut said the Kiir’s side “proposed that the SPLM-IO and SSOA have no deputy Governors and claiming that it’s not in the peace deal, which is a delaying tactic to buy time while our people are suffering on the grassroots level without food, clean water and the security to protect them since that there is political Vacuum in the States.”
The SPLM-IO official revealed that the SPLM-IO is demanding three deputy governors in “any state of our choice.”
