Juba, South Sudan,
July 30, 2021 – The leadership of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) under the chairmanship of Dr. Riek Machar Teny has accused President Salva Kiir of ‘tactical’ delay in appointing their nominee to the position of the Deputy Minister of Interior.
According to the information received by Nyamilepedia, the SPLM-IO says Mr. Kiir has been hesitant to endorse the appointment of Nyanagwek Kuol who also doubles as the SPLM-IO Chairperson in Abyei Administrative Area as the new Deputy Minister of Interior as per the provision of the 2018 peace deal, which allocated nine cabinet posts and three deputies to the SPLM-IO.
In March last year, the position of the deputy minister of interior was offered to Mabior Garang, eldest son to late John Garang de Mabior and founder of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement. However, Mr. Mabior resigned six months later citing a lack of political will from parties to implement the agreement.
SPLM-IO director of information, Puok Both Baluang said, the president did not appoint a new nominee for the position of deputy minister of interior forwarded by the SPLM leadership.
“The name of our nominee to the position of deputy minister of interior was forwarded to the president in December 2020, but no appointment has been made until now, and no reasons were given,” Baluang was quoted by Radio Tomazuj to have said.
The SPLM-IO official called on Kiir to appoint their nominee to the position of deputy minister of interior to complete the executive structure of the Revitalized Government of National Unity.
“It is important that we complete the structures of the executive. The appointment of a deputy minister of interior is important because the person will help the minister in enforcing law and order across the country,” Pouk said.
Nyenagwek, who hails from the disputed area of Abyei, joined Machar’s SPLM-IO in November 2019 after she defected from the Former Detainees (FDs). She voted against Kiir’s controversial 32 states in 2019.
