August 20, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – Senior SPLA-IO general who has been detained since late last month by the South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF) in the country’s Tonj of Warrap state has been released, sources said.
General Gabriel Bol Wek was arrested in July by the soldiers of the SSPDF who were on a disarmament campaign in Tonj and other parts of areas in the Greater Bahr el Ghazal region. Since then, the SPLA-IO officer has been under the detention of government in Tonj.
Speaking to Nyamilepedia this evening, a senior SPLA-IO officer confirmed that General Gabriel Wek Bol has been released and civilians who were under SPLA-IO detention have in return been released.
“Brigadier General Wek Bol has been released. The civilians who have been detained by the SPLA-IO have also been released. SO, this marks the end of the misunderstanding between SSPDF and SPLA-IO in Wau,” the SPLA-IO officer said on condition of anonymity.
Last week, SSPDF spokesman Major General Lul Ruai Koang told Nyamilepedia that the then detained SPLA-IO officer was a “highway” criminal, and the army was surprised when the SPLA-IO claimed that he belongs to them.
