June 20th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – Rebel forces of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO) are deserting barracks in Central Equatoria’s Yei due to food shortage, a force commander, in the area said Wednesday.

In an interview with the Juba-based Eye Radio, SPLA-IO Division Commander in Ngiri cantonment site in Yei River state, General Chance Sisimaya Taban, said he is unable to control his forces due to the prevailing challenges that includes food shortage.

I have a lot of soldiers -around 2,000, and others are still in the forests because of lack of food,” Taban said.

I cannot convince them to come to the cantonment area because there is no food for them, but they are ready, just waiting to come,” he added.

Following the agreement by the parties to South Sudan’s revitalized peace agreement in September last year to designate cantonment site for opposition forces, Ngiri was identified as cantonment site for SPLA-IO and SSOA forces in March.
