May 23, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) — South Sudan’s First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny has said this afternoon that he is recovering well from the coronavirus disease also known as COVID-19.
This comes after reports circulated on social media alleged that the powerful opposition and SPLM-IO leader has been evacuated to a European country after his health conditions deteriorated following his contraction of the virus.
In a WhatsApp message today, Machar refuted the reports and said he and his wife, Angelina Teny, who is the country’s defense minister, were fine and that they were doing their normal home activities as they recover.
“There are rumours that I have been medically evacuated to UK or Germany. This is not true. I am in the residence in Juba Amarat,” Machar wrote.
“Angelina and I are fine. The guards are also doing fine. I am spending my time doing some work. Have a good time,” the opposition leader added.
Last week, Machar publicly announced that he and Teny were tested positive for the novel coronavirus. He said several others inside the formed COVID-19 high-level taskforce headed by him were tested positive.
Information minister Michael Makuei is the other senior government official to announce publicly that he has been tested and found positive for the deadly disease.
