South Sudan’s Kiir to convene high-level SPLM reunification meeting

May 14th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan President, Salva Kiir Mayardiit, who is also the Chairman of the fractured, yet the ruling SPLM [Sudan People’s Liberation Movement] party, will soon convene a high-level reunification meeting of the party according to a statement issued by the Presidency on Monday.

This came following a meeting between the President and a delegation of the country’s former detainees led by Rebecca Garang, the widow of the SPLM founder, Dr. John Garang de’Mabior.

The meeting between the rival SPLM leaders took place at the state house also known as “J1” on Monday.

The meeting as well discussed – according to the presidency statement – the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement signed in September last year following the extension of the pre-transitional period in Addis Ababa last week.

“…..the President of the Republic and Chairman of the party will call for the convening of the leadership of the party in the coming days to announce the arrangements to unite the SPLM in the last stage,” the Presidency statement said quoted a senior SPLM official.
