November 4th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has directed the country’s ministry of defense to increase the army’s salaries, the presidency announced in a statement this afternoon.
Kiir who was addressing the closing session of the 7th army command conference in Bilpam on Monday also directed the army command and the peace implementing body National Pre-Transitional Committee (NPTC) to comply with the conference’s resolutions on the implementation of the security arrangements.
“President Salva Kiir directed the ministry of defense and veteran affairs to ensure that the army is well equipped and given adequate facilities to carry out their work, and to also have their salaries and allowances increased,” the statement by the presidency said.
“President Salva Kiir directed the army and the organs of NPTC to fully comply with the resolutions and recommendations reached by the council as an urgent matter,” the statement added.
South Sudan government and opposition groups in 2018 signed a revitalized version of a 2015 peace agreement to end the ongoing civil war.
The agreement provided for the formation of a unified army, police and other organized forces including the national security service.
