Nov 19, 2019(Nyamilepedia) — South Sudan’s defunct Transitional National Legislative Assembly, a national parliament that was barely extended for 100 days last week, may impeach the current Speaker, Hon. Anthony Lino Makana, any minute from now.
Makana was given 24 hours by members of the SPLM Caucus last night to resign and redeem his image or otherwise risks being impeached by the parliament on Wednesday, November 20, 2019.
An emergency caucus meeting, held last night, established that the speaker has been involved in various scandals and misconducts that include corruption and failure of the parliament to hold meaningful sessions during his term.
About 196 members of the SPLM Caucus unanimously blamed Makana for lawmakers failures to deliver services across the country and called on him to resign to be investigated.
Hon. Makana has refused to acknowledge the allegations and said only President Kiir can impeach him, and therefore he can’t resign unless removed by the president.
The caucus agreed that in case if he fail to resign within 24 hours, then they will ask the SPLM Chairman to remove him and order for his investigation.
Makana was appointed when the curren TNLA was established in 2016, a position that should have been nominated by the SPLM-IO, however, the events of July 2016 impeded procedural process leading to numerous violations of the then peace agreement.
