October 12th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudanese refugees in East Africa are not decreasing despite the signing of the revitalized peace agreement in Ethiopia last month, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) have said.
South Sudan government signed a peace agreement in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa last month with armed opposition groups to end the five year old civil war.
Speaking during a meeting organized by the International Development Committee, the Executive Director of The International Rescue Committee, Sanj Srikanthan, said the scale of displacement of South Sudanese citizens is not slowing down despite the signing of peace deal last month by warring sides in South Sudan.
“The scale of displacement is not slowing down in East Africa. Active conflicts in South Sudan mean 2 million people are internally displaced there, with a further 1.8 million hosted by Uganda,” he said.
Fighting in Central Equatoria last month continued hours after the agreement was signed by President Salva Kiir Mayardiit and opposition leader Dr. Rieking Machar Teny.
According to the United Nations High Commission for Refugee (UNHCR), the influx of South Sudan refugees into Camps has resulted into the worse refugee crisis in Africa.
South Sudan descended into civil war In December 2013 following a flareup of violence at a National Convention of the ruling SPLM leading to a massacre against ethnic Nuer in Juba igniting a civil war.
