September 5th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – A South Sudanese refugee has been killed in an ambush in Ethiopia’s Tharpam refugee camp in the Western region of Gambella, an official said Thursday.
The Ethiopian official who spoke to Nyamilepedia on the condition of anonymity this morning said the slain South Sudanese refugee and other passengers were coming from a nearby camp heading to the Tharpam Refugee Camp when the vehicle they were traveling in came under heavy attack by unknown gunmen.
“We just received this information from eyewitnesses that a South Sudanese refugee was also among those who died in the attack. We were informed that the car they were traveling in was stopped on the road by unidentified armed men in mixed military uniforms,” the said.
The official disclosed that investigations were underway and that the criminals behind the attack were being man-hunted and said he was hopeful that they will be apprehended in the shortest possible time.
“Yes, there’s an ongoing investigation, that’s the role of the security forces to ensure that laws and orders are respected and the perpetrators must be pursued, arrested and brought to justice immediately,” the official said.
The Tharpam Refugee Camp is located near the Gambella region, Ethiopia, and is run by the Refugee and Returnee Affairs Department (ARRA)- one of the leading agencies responsible for the protection and coordination of refugees affairs.
