December 20th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – Dozens of South Sudanese asylum seekers stranded in the troubled north African country, Libya, have appealed for evacuation as immigrant situations worsens.
Libya, which descended into a bloody civil war in 2011 following the ouster of the longtime Libyan leader Muamar Al-Qaddafi, become an exit point to Europe for immigrants fleeing violence and persecution in Sudan, Ethiopia and Eritrea.
Speaking to the Nyamilepedia on phone from the Libyan capital Tripoli on Wednesday, several South Sudanese asylum seekers said they want to return back to South Sudan as they face uncertain future in Libya.
“Its better to return, we want to return home. Libya is no longer a better place to reach Europe,” one resident who declined to be name d told the Nyamilepedia on Wednesday.
Another South Sudanese asylum seeker who identified himself as Bol revealed that the Italian police and coast guard expelled organizations working in the Mediterranean to rescue asylum seekers reaching Italia.
“They (Italian authorities) have expelled rescue organizations and so it is very dangerous for people (the immigrants) to cross because it is not known whether there will be a rescue or not,” Bol said.
