July 15, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – A local South Sudan rights group has urged the parties to the revitalized peace agreement to end disagreements and reconstitute the law-making Transitional National Legislature Assembly (TNLA).
According to the revitalized peace agreement, the parties to the deal shall reconstitute the legislative assembly and the council of states which make up the country’s bicameral parliament.
However, this has not been done given the fact that most of the provisions of the revitalized peace deal have not been accomplished as provided for in the agreement because of disagreements between the parties.
In a statement to Nyamilepedia, the Center for peace and Advocacy, a Juba-based rights group, called the parties to the revitalized peace to reconstitute the parliament saying there was no proper oversight body against the executive.
“The Center for Peace and Advocacy (CPA) is deeply concerned by the parties’ delay to reconstitute the National Parliament. The parties to the agreement have continued to sadly drag their feet,” the statement extended to Nyamilepedia partly reads.
“The Center for Peace and Advocacy (CPA) strongly appeals to the parties to show some seriousness and political maturity by implementing what they have consented to. It is never too late to show the much needed political will to avert the country back from the looming ascendance to the abyss,” the statement added.
“The Constitutional Amendment Committee is as important as the security arrangement, these two lay the foundation of a -would-be peaceful South Sudan, just as their absence means setting back the country to its bleak and dark path.
We cannot sit back and wait for things to escalate further than this, the Center for Peace and Advocacy (CPA) is, therefore, sounding the alarm bell. The people of South Sudan cannot stand another political turmoil amidst the novel Corona Virus.
“We are calling on the international community and the grantors of the agreement to pressurize the belligerent parties to implement it without prejudice and sabotage. The R-ARCSS, if anything, is the last hope for the people of South Sudan. The Center for Peace and Advocacy (CPA) cannot help notice that, the very agreement meant to save the people of South Sudan was dead on arrival and it’s now on its way to the final destination-the grave!”
