South Sudan vice-president’s father dies of COVID-19

June 6, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – Father of South Sudan vice-president Hussein Abdelbaggi who tested for COVID-19 in late May has died of COVID-19, officials close to the vice-president said this afternoon from Juba.

General Abdelbaggi Ayii Akol who is reportedly the founder of the South Sudan Patriotic Front (SSPF) contracted the virus from his son days before he tested positive for the virus.

Hussein who heads of the National Taskforce on COVID-19 tested positive for the virus on May 27.

He reportedly met his father the previous day at a Hotel in Juba where Hussein himself is being accommodated.

“Yes it is true. General Abdelbaggi Akol has died this morning at dawn at a local hospital here. He was infected with the corona[virus],” a government official was is quoted by the independent South Sudan News Now from as saying.

“He had contact with Hussein the day before his COVID-19 test results were returned. I think this is how he contracted the virus,” the unidentified official added.
