December 10th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan government has repeatedly used extrajudicial killings to silence dissent, the United States of America said in a statement on Tuesday.
An extrajudicial killing is the killing of a person by governmental authorities or individuals without the sanction of any judicial proceeding or legal process and it often target leading figures opposing the government.
“The South Sudanese Government has repeatedly used extrajudicial killings as a means to silence dissent, limit freedom of speech and the press, and enforce the political status quo,” the US Treasury said in a statement this afternoon.
“Its refusal to create political space for dissenting voices — be they from opposition parties, civil society, or media — is a major factor in the country’s inability to implement its peace deal and form a national unity government,” the statement added.
The world power said it was “taking action against five individuals responsible for the abduction and likely murder of two human rights activists in 2017.”
