November 23rd 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) said in a statement on Friday that the protection of a journalists is important to ensure a free and independent press in South Sudan.
South Sudan has been one of the countries where journalists find it very difficult to work. Many journalists have been killed since the eruption of war in the world’s youngest nation in December 2013.
In a statement on Friday, the UNSC said: Â “The Security Council recalled its resolution 2222 (2015) on the protection of journalists, and affirmed that the work of a free, independent and impartial media constitutes one of the essential foundations of a democratic society, and thereby can contribute to the protection of civilians.”
The statement also re-affirmed the Council’s “support for the people of South Sudan and reaffirmed their strong commitment to the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and national unity of the Republic of South Sudan.”
