September 10th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan government will not pay foreign companies, and particularly China, in return for developmental projects including road construction according to President Salva Kiir Mayardiit.
Kiir who was speaking to a congregation at St Theresa Cathedral in the capital Juba on Sunday, said they have agreed to pay the money in form of crude oil.
“We agreed that South Sudan will not pay them any cash but they will come with whatever they have from their money, they build the roads and we give them crude oil,” Kiir said.
He revealed that they have agreed with their Chinese counterparts for the construction of highway linking the capital Juba with important towns
“We agreed the road from Nadapal all the way to Torit and to Juba and again from Juba down the road to Rumbek and to Wau,” said President Kiir.
He said the decision to pay the cost include oil was to avoid the money ending up in the pockets of corrupt individuals in the government.
“I decided that the infrastructure or whatever that we want to be done by foreign companies has to be done in exchange for crude oil because our people don’t want to see money. If they see money, their hands start shaking,” he said.
