August 18th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardiit said on Saturday that his government will ensure that all armed groups in Sudan return home and join the transition.
Kiir made the remarks in Khartoum during the signing ceremony of the agreement on the transitional authority between the ruling military junta and the Forces for Freedom and Changes (FFC).
Kiir who pointed to a strong and historical relationship between Sudan and south Sudan reiterated the support of the government and people of South Sudan towards the “brothers” in the north.
“We have a common historical bond over the hundreds of years we have spent as one people within a single country. Our support is driven by a genuine desire to live and prosper peacefully together with our brothers and sisters in Sudan,” Kiir said.
“It is on the basis of this understanding that the people of and government of South Sudan avails itself of the opportunity to mediate a settlement between the Sovereign Council and the armed groups,” he added.
In the past, Sudan and South Sudan have exchanging barbs over support and harboring of rebel groups in both countries’ territories.
In mid 2018, Sudan mediated between Salva Kiir’s government and opposition groups leading to the signing of a revitalized version of a 2015 peace agreement in Ethiopia in September.
The South Sudan government for its part offered to mediate between armed groups in Darfur and Sudan’s two areas on one side and the government in Khartoum on the other.
Kiir said his government in Juba will ensure that Sudan’s armed groups return to the country and participate in the transition.
“South Sudan will play an important role in ensuring that the armed groups come home and be part of this transition,” Kiir said.
