South Sudan to begin screening foreigners on Monday

January 6th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan government announced on Friday that a nation-wide screening process of foreigners living in the country will commence on Monday as per orders of the Minister of Interior Michael Chiengjiek Gey.

Currently, hundreds of thousands of foreigners mostly from the east African region are living in South Sudan without proper documentation with some entering the country illegally.

In a statement issued Friday, the South Sudan Police announced that the minister of interior, Michael Chiengjiek Gey ordered the establishment of centers for the purpose of screening foreigners.

“Hon. Minister of Interior Michael Chiangjiek Ordered the Directorate of Nationality passport and Immigration to immediately establish centers on Monday 07-01-2019 to screen out foreigners who are staying in the country illegally,” the statement partly read.

It further said that some foreigners who are living in South Sudan “are committing crimes in the country.”

In a press conference held on Saturday, the Director General of teh Department of Immigration, Passport and Nationality, Gen. John Akot, said the police is asking all foreigners to report to screening centers which will be opened up in all the 32 states.

“So we are asking all the aliens to come to the designated centers for screening. They should come with their legal documents for verification,” Gen. Akot said warning that “those who are staying here illegally will be asked to legalize their stay here, or otherwise they will be deported.”

We want to screen for them to stay here secure because South Sudan has a sovereignty as the others do,” he added.
