Oct 8, 2020(Nyamilepedia) — South Sudan Authorities have suspended the renovation of Juba stadium after one side of the facility partially collapsed on Tuesday afternoon during construction.
The collapsing of the stadium caused anger among South Sudanese who circulated the images on Social Media.
The Minister of Youth and Sports, Albino Bol Dhieu said that no renovation shall take place to pave way for investigations.
“I am announcing to the public that the work has to cease for a while until further notice. From now onwards, the work has to stop,” the Minister of Youth and Sports, announced on Wednesday during a visit to the stadium.
The project was being constructed by an Ethiopian company, GS Construction which was contracted by Fifa last year to renovate the stadium to international standards.
GS Construction Managing Director, Girma Shiferaw, has denied allegations that some workers were injured in the incident.
“We have a moral obligation to investigate what has happened. It seems to be a minor issue, but as a ministry, we will not leave it like that because it is something touching the life of the people of South Sudan.” Said the Minister of Youth and Sports
The renovation of the 7,500-seater stadium, estimated to cost $6m (£4m), was expected to be completed by the end of the year.
