South Sudan: Senior gov’t officials recover from coronavirus

June 8, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan government said on Sunday that six of its more senior officials who were tested positive for COVID-19 last month have recovered after the ministry of health’s public laboratory said last tests for the officials have returned negative.

The country’s First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny and his wife and defense minister Angelina Teny along with several other ministers including the minister of information Michael Makuei Lueth tested positive for the virus on may 17.

The senior government officials have been in quarantine as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) to lower the risk of spreading the virus to others.

Speaking to SSBC on Sunday, the undersecretary of the ministry of health Dr. Makur Koriom, said the first vice president, minister of defense Angelina Teny, information minister Michael Makuei Lueth, minister of justice and constitutional affairs Reuben Madol Arol, environment minister Josephine Napon and deputy foreign minister Deng Dau Deng have recovered.

“The first vice president Dr. Riek Machar Teny has recovered along the ministers of information, defense, information, justice and the deputy minister of foreign affairs,” Koriom said.

“The last test of all the officials have returned negative and therefore are free to continue with their ordinary duties,” the official added.
