June 24th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – Members of South Sudan’s National Security Service (NSS) have arrested a man suspected of having ties to former army chief, General Paul Malong Awan, a source has said.

The incident – the source said – took place in the country’s Northern Bahr Al-Ghazal state in an area near the state capital Aweil. The source said the man was in his farm when the security agents approached him.

He said he was told he is one of Malong supporters in the state because they believed that the farm, that the source claimed to be the man’s, belongs to the former ally of President Salva Kiir.

He said the security agents destroyed the crops before moving away with the Man to an unknown location.

The National Security personnel arrested the man and cut down these maize crops, claiming that the owner of the farm is an associate of former chief of staff, Gen. Paul Malong,” the source said.

Malong has been a close ally to President Salva Kiir Mayardiit and the two broke up following Malong’s dismissal as the army chief in May 2017.

He fled to Nairobi and later on formed the South Sudan United Front/Army (SSUF/A) that aims to remove President Salva Kiir from power.

He is not a part of the revitalized peace agreement signed by the government and rebel group in September last year in a bid to end the ongoing civil war.
