February 6th 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – The African Union (AU) has urged South Sudan rivals to meet the deadline for the formation of the revitalized unity government which is set for late this month.

The continental body further welcomed the on-going peace process in South Sudan, which is hoped will culminate in lasting stability in the war-ravaged country.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the African Union Peace and Security Council called on all parties involved to continue addressing the issues that still hinder the implementation of the peace agreement.

“The Peace and Security Council urges all parties to unequivocally adhere to the extended deadline of 22 February 2020, the second extension of 100 days for the formation of an inclusive Revitalised Transitional Government of National Unity, with a view to rebuilding trust and confidence,” the statement read in part.

The council also noted the presence of rebel leader Riek Machar in Juba and encouraged him to move to the capital permanently as part of the efforts to rebuild South Sudan.

The world’s youngest nation sank into chaos in December 2013, sparked by a feud between President Salva Kiir and his then deputy Machar.

Kiir accused Machar of plotting a coup against his rule, allegations the latter refuted but then went on to mobilize a rebel force to fight the government.

The ensuing conflict has killed hundreds of thousands and displaced millions others, prompting the United Nations to rank South Sudan as Africa’s biggest refugee crisis.

With the on-going dialogue however, both regional and international players are confident that the country will soon enjoy much desired peace and work towards rebuilding.
