January 29th 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan government has rejected further extension of the pre-transitional period, according to a senior government official.
South Sudan government and opposition groups signed a revitalized version of a 2015 peace deal two years ago. The agreement required the parties to form a unity government.
However, that action could not be taken because pending issues such as of the security arrangements and determination of the number and boundaries of states were not resolved.
The parties has missed several deadlines to form the government because of what the international community has said was a lack of will to implement the peace agreement.
Opposition groups including the SPLM-IO led by Machar have expressed reservation on the government formation next month saying there was need for implementation of the pending issues.
Information minister and government spokesman Michael Makuei said today that the government will not accept another extension of the pre-transitional period.
“Our position will be clearly stated in a press conference that we will be holding soon,” Makuei was quoted by the Eye Radio. “But of course, we don’t agree with whatever they [SPLM-IO] said in that statement.”
