November 26th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan government on Tuesday said in a statement that it regrets what it said were “contradictory statements” and yesterday’s decision by the US state department to recall its South Sudan ambassador over failure of the parties to the revitalized peace agreement form a unity government on time as planned.
Yesterday, the United States of America recalled its ambassador to South Sudan saying it was re-evaluating ties with the government of president Salva Kiir Mayardit who has been accused of lacking the political will needed in the implementation of the peace agreement he signed with opposition groups in September last year.
In a statement this afternoon, South Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said it regrets the decision of the United States government to recall its South Sudan envoy reiterating Kiir’s commitment to bring peace to the war-ravaged nation.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation of the Republic of South Sudan regrets the decision of the State Department to recall its Ambassador to South Sudan, at a time where South Sudan expects the region and the international community to positively engage the parties signatory to the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS),” the statement seen by the Nyamilepedia partly read.
“As it pertains to the position of the Government of the Republic of South Sudan regarding the extension, H.E, President Salva Kiir Mayardit has been consistently on record about his commitment to the formation of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGoNU) on 12 November 2019, The President has never asked for an extension of the pre-transitional period,” the statement added.
It said the United States government has been issuing contradictory statements in recent weeks over the formation of what would be the Reconstituted Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGoNU) by the parties to the agreement.
“While the US State Department called for the formation of R-TGONU on time, they have consistently mode contradictory statements in that regard. In an official statement, the State Department warned the Government of the Republic of South Sudan that any unilateral decision to form the R- TGONU will not be welcomed. They further urged the President to form an inclusive government of all the parties, specifically stating that a government cannot be formed without Dr. Riek Machar Teny,” the statement said.
The statement further said it was “unfortunate that Mr. Mike Pompeo, the United States Secretary of State questioned the suitability of our Head of State. An act thot is regrettable and in total disregard of the norms of diplomatic practices.”
