September 3rd 2018 (Nyamilepedia) –Â Bimonthly distribution of food ratios have affected a number of South Sudanese refugee families in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya, several households told Nyamilepedia on Friday.
In August, UN Agency, the World Food Programme (WFP) started to distribute bimonthly food ratios to refugees which was meant to cover two months but majority of refugee families who merely rely on food ratios from the WFP said they had exhausted their two-month food ratios within a month.
It’s not yet clear, whether the distribution of food ratios on a bimonthly basis links to funding shortfalls.
Last month, the South Korean Prime Minister, Lee Nak-yon handed over a donation of about 33,000 tonnes of rice to the World Food Programme (WFP), for refugees living in Kenya and Ethiopia and the donation was delivered and distributed to refugee families in August at different Camp levels.
Angelika Naboya, mother of two said the small portion of food ratio they received a meant to cover two months have already been exhausted.
She told the Nyamilepedia that she’s sometimes compelled to skip one meal in a bid to avoid running out of food, before the end of the said two months.
“My children and I always skip one meal or miss our launch to avoid running out of food ratio, before the two months end. It would be better if the World Food Programme (WFP) change this system,” she said.
Angelika and other business group of vulnerable women recently got support from Germany Cooperation, an agency that supports vulnerable women in the Camp.
The support from the agency enables them to make ends meet through selling out greens vegatbles.
“We were given a temporary structure next to the food distribution center with that support from Germany Cooperation, we will be selling out vegetables and tomatoes but this business alone will not hep,” she said.
