December 19th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan government on Thursday recalled its ambassador to Washington as diplomatic spat escalates with the Trump Administration over the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.
This comes weeks after the United States recalled its ambassador to Juba few days before sanctioning South Sudan’s defense and cabinet ministers for obstruction of peace process.
President Kiir signed with opposition groups a revitalized version of a 2015 peace agreement.
The agreement meant to avert suffering in the world’s youngest nation however witnessed setbacks because the leaders lack the political will needed for its implementation.
The United States has threatened to impose more sanctions if the South Sudan leaders fail to fully implement the agreement meant to avert the ongoing suffering.
Presidential adviser Ted Dagne said South Sudan’s Washington ambassador, Phillip Jada, is expected to return to the capital Juba this weekend.
South Sudan descended into civil war in December 2013 after thousands of civilians from the Nuer ethnic groups were massacred by a government militia believed to have taken direct orders from President Salva Kiir.
Almost 400,000 people have been killed and millions have been displaced to refugee and IDP camps. The UN said early this year that more than half of South Sudan’s population is on the brink of starvation.
