South Sudan President meets South African Vice President over peace implementation

October 15th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan President, Salva Kiir Mayardiit, met on Monday with the visiting South African Vice President, David Mabuza, who arrived in the country on Sunday afternoon, the South Sudan Presidency announced.

David Mabuza, the South African Vice President who is also the Deputy Chairman of the ruling African National Congress arrived in the capital Juba yesterday to engage President Salva Kiir over the implementation of the revitalized agreement signed in September.

South Sudan government and opposition groups including the SPLM-IO signed on September 12th 2018 the long-awaited revitalized peace agreement in an effort brokered by the regional eastern African bloc, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to end the ongoing conflict.

In a statement on Monday afternoon, the South Sudan Presidency announced that the visiting South African envoy met the South Sudanese head of state on Monday at the state house in Juba.

“The President of the Republic of South Sudan, His Excellency, Salva Kiir Mayardit held talks with the Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa and Special Envoy to South Sudan David Mabuza in the State House in Juba on Monday,” the South Sudan Presidency said in a statement on Monday.

The Presidency further added that the talks, also attended by various stakeholders in the agreement, focused on the implementation of the September 12 agreement signed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

“The Deputy President Mabuza is in South Sudan to hold talks with the various stake holders in the on-going efforts to find lasting peace, stability and development in the Republic of South Sudan,” the statement further added.

The visiting South African envoy is also expected to tour the region to help find a solution for most contentious issues as well as the expedition of implementation of the peace agreement signed by the government and opposition groups.
