April 17, 2021(Nyamilepedia) — South Sudan president, H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit, who arrived in Pretoria, South Africa, on Thursday has this evening, Saturday April 17, met with the South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and held talks on bilateral ties between the two countries.
According to a press statement from South Sudan’s Presidential Press Unit, President Kiir was received at the South African’s State House today where he discussed a wide range of issues with his South African counterpart, Cyril Ramaphosa
“H.E. President Salva kiir was received by his South African Counterpart President Cyril Ramaphosa this evening ( Saturday 17th April 2021) at the State House and held a meeting on a wide range of issues pertaining to the implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement and ways of strengthening and deepening the bilateral relations between South Sudan and South Africa.” Read part of a statement from J1.
The South Sudanese president briefed President Ramaphosa on the implementation of the peace agreement stating that the peace agreement is “firmly on track”
“In a bilateral meeting, President Kiir briefed his host on the progress of implementation of the Peace Agreement, noting that it is firmly on track with the exception of a few issues that will be resolved soon.” The Presidential Press Unit added.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, the Minister of Presidential Affairs Hon. Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin said the two leaders discussed issues pertaining to the implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement and explored mutual areas of interest and investment opportunities in South Sudan.
According to Dr. Marial the peace agreement in South Sudan is holding and as such the South Sudanese leaders are inviting the South Africans to come to invest in the country.
“With peace holding , President Salva Kiir invites South Africans business to conduct meaningful investment in South Sudan, a step that will prove mutually beneficial to the two Countries.” Dr. Marial Benjamin said.
In addition, Dr. Barnaba Marial said, President Salva Kiir Mayardit informed his South African Counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa that he wholeheartedly welcomes the appointment of Nicholas Haysom as Secretary General Representative and Head of UNMISS.
This will be the first official foreign visit for the troubled South Sudanese president since Dr. Riek Machar, the First Vice President and the leader of the main armed opposition, who is currently acting in his absence, returned to the country.
President Kiir’s visit came at a time when his health concerns and speculations heightened following his recent visit to Bor, Jonglei State.
Machar has also not left the country, however, he seems happy to remain in charge of the country while Kiir goes away.
