June 1, 2016(Nyamilepedia) —— South Sudan’s presidency, which comprises of President Salva Kiir, First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar and the second Vice President James Wani Igga, has held a surprise meeting today in Juba.

According to Dr. Riek Machar Teny and James Wani Igga, who briefed the nation, the meeting was very fruitful.

Speaking on South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation(SSBC), formerly SSTV, Machar assured that the presidency has unanimously withdrawn the issue of 28 states and handed it over to an independent committee as agreed by the parties and highly recommended by JMEC, IGAD-Plus and partners.

Machar reiterates that the independent committee will be composed of 10 South Sudanese delegates who will be nominated by the big parties and 5 foreign delegates from the international and regional partners.

In addition, the presidency have unanimously agreed to involve South Africa and Tanzania in resolving the 28 states.

“We have called on our comrades South Africa and Tanzania to join that committee so that they can work on the number of states, review them and they come up with recommendations on the number of states, and this will be within 30 days” Machar said.

The two role model states successfully led Arusha SPLM Reunification Agreement in 2014 until the parties soften their positions and reached an agreement on January 21, 2015.

The parties acknowledge that if they disagree on the new number of states to be proposed by the committee, they will revert to 10 states.

According to Dr. Machar, the committee will research and study the need of more states in the country and make their recommendations within 30 days.

The presidency also revisited the issue of prisoners of war and other detainees to be released without further delay.

In addition, the leaders further welcomed the settlement of cantonment areas in all the three regions of South Sudan as agreed last Friday.

The leaders have promised to resolve the remaining outstanding issues very soon.

This would be the first time the South Sudanese leaders, representing the three regions, resolved major outstanding issues by themselves without involving politicians and military generals who seem to complicate issues that could be solved in a few hours like today.

The report was subsequently announced by the leaders themselves with big smiles on the faces of Salva Kiir and Wani Igga as Riek speak for the first time on a national television that is currently undergoing reforms.

The swift action by the South Sudanese leaders coincides with the United Nations Security Council’s resolution 2290(2016) that renews sanctions on individuals who act contrary to the peace agreement.

The First Vice President calls on the International Community and partners to help fund logistic, food, shelter and implementation of the peace agreement.
