South Sudan: Police Arrest Teachers and Pupils Allegedly For Embezzling Fund Meant For “Girls Education South Sudan” Project

Nov 28, 2016(Nyamilepedia) —-– speaking to Nyamilepedia press over the phone, Mr. Isaac Juma Zungua, the Acting Director-General in Gbudwe State’s Ministry of Education, said that at least two teachers and four school girls have been arrested by police allegedly for embezzling funds meant for Girls Education South Sudan(GESS) project in Yambio, Western Equatoria state.

According to William Ganiko, a police officer in Yambio, who talk to our correspondent, two teachers from Yabongo Girls Primary School, who have been receiving money on ghost names of girls, are arrested.

Press spoke to one of the victims on assurance of condition of anonymity for her safety; she said her teacher authorized her to receive money with a different name, but all the money was taken from her by that teacher.

In a related case, Mary Nunu, a senior One in Secondary school, told press that she was called by her former primary school teacher to come to her at her school premise. On her arrival she was given a token for receiving money on her name but told to remain silence.

“I keep on asking my friends whereas about the money she received and handed over to teacher but no any clear messages from my friend and a teacher who received money from me too,” Nunu said.

On another account, the school authorities said that two of them appeared with two receipts bearing one name; one was valid, but the other one was invalid according to evidences se by the staffs.

“During the incident, I made my own visitations to some of the schools to find out why there was mismanagement in giving GESS money to the right owners, I found this mess has occurred, this will continues, any teacher found guilty of corruption law will takes it course,” Juma said.

The Acting Director General, Mr. Isaac Juma Zungua, added that each of the beneficiaries, under the GESS, is expected to get two thousand three hundred South Sudanese Pounds only for her basic needs and this initiative is meant to maintain needy girls’ education.

Police says the six suspects are now under police custody pending further investigation, a report Nyamilepedia could not independently verify.
