South Sudan peace process: Parties attends permanent ceasefire workshop in Khartoum

September 25th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The Ceasefire and Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (CTSAMVM) on Monday convened a workshop for the South Sudan’s warring parties on the Permanent Ceasefire and Transitional Security Arrangements (PCTSA) as stipulated in the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

In a statement seen by Nyamilepedia on Monday, the two-day workshop scheduled to take place from 24-25, this week, will focus on modalities aimed at internationalizing the permanent ceasefire frameworks and at the end of the workshop, the parties to the conflict are expected to brief the Ceasefire and Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (CTSAMVM) on the way forward and their plans for implementing the ceasefire in accordance with the implementation matrix in the R-ARCSS.

During his opening remarks, the deputy chairman of the Ceasefire and Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring and Verification Mechanism, Maj. Gen. Tariq Abdelkarim, welcomed the South Sudanese warring parties to the two-day workshop and urged them to play a significant role in silencing the guns in the country.

“Excellencies,Colleagues, ladies and gentlemen, Good morning and welcome to the CTSAMVM workshop. As you are all aware the peace process has gained huge momentum in recent months and you, the people sitting in this room, have the biggest role to play in silencing the guns in the country. As you are aware it is now D-Day plus 12. The fate of the country rest upon your shoulders,” he told the parties.

Gen. Tariq urged the warring factions at the workshop to give a meaningful piece of advice to their respective forces and warned them to keep an eye on spoilers of South Sudan peace process.

“Be aware of the critics who want to derail this process, we must prove them wrong and give hope to the population both inside and outside of the country. I believe you will show the necessary leadership and advise your respective organisations to implement the ceasefire framework. I implore all of you present to work with us in order to achieve our joint pursuit of peace,” he said.

Tariq pointed out that the aim of the workshop is to collect views of all warring factions on the implementation matrix as well as dissemination of the revitalized agreement to their respective forces on the ground.

“The aim of this workshop is to is to hear from you on your plans to implement the agreement as per the implementation matrix, this includes dissemination of the agreement to your forces and affiliates, procedures and plans for disengagement of forces in close proximity, opening up of humanitarian corridors, releasing prisoners of war and detainees to the ICRC, cease all recruitment and refrain from all hostile actions as detailed in the Agreement on the Cessation of Hostilities, 21 December, 2017,” he added.
