August 19th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan leaders are self-interested who are seeking to maximize their sectional advantages and benefits, the United Nations Special Envoy for Sudan and South Sudan, Nicolas Haysom, said Friday.

The UN diplomat was talking in an interview with the PSC when he doubted the commitment if the South Sudan leaders in achieving peace in the world’s youngest nation.

“How does one manufacture political will if the parties are self-interested, seeking only to maximize their sectional advantages and benefits,” Nicolas asked.

He said the primary responsibility to ending the ongoing conflict in South Sudan lies in the hand of the South Sudan leaders warning that there will be consequences in case they failed to end the conflict.

“One can only make it clear to the parties that they bear the responsibility for making this agreement work and that if it fails there will be consequences for them. I am not singling out the government or the opposition. I think it’s a responsibility they all bear,” he said.

South Sudan government led by President Salva Kiir Mayardiit and the SPLM-IO under the leadership of the First Vice President Designate Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon signed a peace deal in the Sudanese capital Khartoum early this month.

Other armed and non-armed South Sudan opposition groups also signed the agreement including the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) and the SPLM-FDs despite early rejection of the proposed peace deal.
