October 1st 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – A number of South Sudan lawmakers from the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) want the pre-transitional period which is ending in one month extended.
South Sudan government and opposition groups signed the revitalized peace agreement in September last year to end the ongoing civil war.
The agreement established a eight-month pre-transitional period which ended in May this year. With most tasks of the pre-transitional period incomplete, the signatories to the agreement decided during a meeting in May in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to extended that period to November 12.
As the dateline looms, important tasks such as the number of states and the security arrangements are not completed.
Opposition groups have made it very clear that they will not accept any formation of the government without the completion of these tasks first.
However, President Salva Kiir Mayardit has made it very clear last month that he will form the government without the SPLM-IO led by Machar – a important group in the agreement – if the later do not cooperate on the matter.
Speaking to Nyamilepedia this morning, two MPs at the TNLA said there is need for the government formation to be postponed so that tasks which are not completed are then implemented.
“There is need for the extension of the pre-transitional period,” one MP said. “because most of the tasks viable for a stable government are not in place.”
Another MP said the government and opposition groups need to agree on this matter because any formation of the revitalized government should not be done unless the preparations needed in place are completed.
“They parties need to agree on this because formation of the government without these preparations will take us to the square one,” the MP said.
