December 14th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – A South Sudan journalist working for Nyamilepedia was briefly detained by Kenyan police in Kakuma on Friday following fighting between refugee communities early this week, the news organization said in a statement on Saturday.
Buay Joshua Kapduel Bol who works for Nyamilepedia as East African Correspondent said he was detained on Friday for several hours after Kenyan police launched crackdown on refugees following fighting involving South Sudan’s Nuer and Sudan’s Nuba communities in Kakuma refugee camp.
In a statement, the Nyamilepedia confirmed the arrest and welcomed Buay’s release.
“The Nyamilepedia would like to take this opportunity to thank the Kenyan police for the unconditional release of its journalist Buay Joshua Kapduel Bol who was detained for several hours on Friday in Kakuma,” the statement signed by the Nyamilepedia editor-in-chief Tor Madira Machier partly reads.
“Buay, who works as Nyamilepedia Chief Correspondent in East Africa was arrested and detained on Friday following fighting between Sudanese and South Sudanese refugees in Kakuma refugee camp early this week,” the statement added.
The news organization said it has regained contact with its journalists saying “the safety of all journalists is a responsibility for every government.”
The statement further urged the “Kenyan government to protect all journalists against arbitrary arrests in the future.”
