March 29, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) — Hundreds of South Sudanese returnees coming from Sudan have fled a quarantine center in South Sudan’s Upper Nile state town of Renk, police there said on Saturday.

Michael Dheiue, a senior police officer in Renk said the people whom he said were coming from Khartoum were quarantined for two weeks but said they failed to respect the quarantine and fled the center.

“There were people who were coming from Sudan through Joda. They were quarantined near the border with Sudan but they wanted to be allowed to South Sudan and they scrambled,” Dhieu said from Renk.

In another interview with Eye Radio, Deng Goc an MP representing Renk County said: “There was no other alternative for Renk authorities, a part of turning the whole town as a big quarantine and to be lockdown totally no entry and no exit only for goods and food items.”

“This will be in Renk from now and for 14 days that is the decision the authorities come out with this morning [Friday].”

South Sudan is one of the few countries around the world with no confirmed cases of the virus which began from the Chinese city of Wuhan in December last year.

A number of suspected cases in the country’s capital Juba and some states have tested negative for the novel coronavirus also known as COVID-19.

South Sudan’s neighbors, Kenya, Sudan, Uganda and Ethiopia, have all confirmed cases of the virus.
