January 28th 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan holdout opposition leaders are reluctant to return to Rome where they were supposed to meet South Sudan government officials to continue talks on the ongoing peace process.
Several opposition sources told Nyamilepedia this morning that opposition leaders from South Sudan Opposition Movements Alliance (SSOMA) were reluctant to go to Rome to protest continued government offensives against their bases in different parts of the country.
“All of our leaders have made it very clear that if the government want to negotiate with them, they must respect their recommitment to the ceasefire agreement,” an opposition official said without providing details.
Another opposition figure in Washington also said on condition of anonymity that the leaders failed to show up a proposed meeting in Rome because the government has continued to attack opposition forces in some parts of the country including in Northern Liech state.
“On one hand, they want to negotiate with us and on the other, they want to fight. How can you justify the recent attack on our forces in Unity state? This is very serious the government of South Sudan need to live up to their commitment to peace in the country,” the opposition official said.
However, another opposition official said they didn’t show up at the meeting because they were informed late and that the meeting has been postponed to February 12.
