February 25th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – A senior South Sudan government official said on Monday that he don not expect the Transitional Government of National Unity (TGoNU) to be formed in or by May 2019 owing to delayment in some pre-transitional preparations.
South Sudan President, Salva Kiir, and opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny last year signed an agreement in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to end the ongoing civil war by forming a unity government.
The mandate of the government which should be in place eight months after the signing of the agreement, is to oversee reforms in the governance system, restore South Sudan’s economy and to rebuild the country’s broken social fabric torn apart by the ongoing ethnic war.
According to the agreement, Kiir will maintain his position as the President and Machar, a former vice-president, will be reinstated back to his position as the First Vice-President during the Transitional period.
Speaking to the Nyamilepedia on Monday, a senior government official from South Sudan’s Presidency said he do not expect the formation of the transitional government of national unity to be in May saying he is not even sure if such thing will happen in June.
The senior government official said his argument is based on the ongoing delays being faced by the National Pre-Transitional Committee (NPTC) in caring out pre-transitional activities which are supposed to be completed before May 2019.
“I don’t expect the [transitional] government to be formed in May. Based on what we can see now, the government might not be in place in May and may not even be formed by June 2019,” the official who requested the condition of anonymity told Nyamilepedia on Monday.
The official further he doubts whether Machar will be in Juba before these “preparations are completed. But what I think should be done now is for the opposition to come home even all these preparations are not met and we come to work for them while all of us are home.”
