Alpha Conde, who was serving his third but controversial term, was ousted on 5th of September 2021 by special forces led by Col. Mamady Doumbouya.

In a statement released on the state owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC), the South Sudan’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Beatrice Khamisa Wani, said that what happened in Guinea was against the constitution and democratic norms as such the government of South Sudan condemns the coup in the strongest terms possible.

The minister also urged the coup initiators to restore the constitutional order which has been suspended in Guinea following the forceful ouster of the head of state.

“The Republic of South Sudan joins the African Union, the United Nations, ECOWAS and other Africa member states to condemn in the strongest terms possible this unconstitutional takeover in Guinea, Conakry which is contrary to the AU constitute Act that advocates for constitutional change of government through elections,” Khamisa said.

She stressed that the government of South Sudan calls for the release of the detained president Alpha Conde and urged the military council to operationalize Guinea’s constitution.

” The Republic of South Sudan therefore, calls for the immediate release of President Alpha Conde as well as the immediate restoration of constitutional rule and order,” she added.
