South Sudan government urged to end war

December 11th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan government has been urged to implement the revitalized peace agreement it signed with opposition groups last year and end the ongoing civil war to enable for stability.

The country descended into civil war in December 2013 after militia forces belonging to President Salva Kiir slaughtered thousands of Nuer civilians in Juba triggering army mutineers leading to civil war.

The government and opposition groups signed a revitalized version of a 2015 peace deal to end the war. The agreement is facing setbacks as rival parties disagree on key components of the deal.

In a statement to mark the International Human Rights day, the South Sudan Human Rights Society for Advocacy (SSHURSA) called on the peace partners to end the war.

“SSHURSA calls on South Sudanese political and military leaders to leave personal pride behind and implement the peace Agreement they signed in 2018. The implementation of the Agreement will allow for stability which will give room for reform of the abusive institutions being obstacle to the promotion of human rights culture,” the said in a statement extended to Nyamilepedia.

“SSHURSA also calls on Intergovernmental Authority on Development, African Union and international community to speak with one voice in wishing South Sudan better future by supporting the implementation of the Agreement. SSHURSA therefore, calls on each power to support peace in South Sudan,” the statement added.
